Congrats to 2010 Lab alum Sarah Rasmussen, who directed the Oregon Shakespeare Festival production of The Two Gentleman of Verona! The show, which features an all-female cast, opened in June and will be running in rep until October 12th at the Allen Elizabethan Theatre.
In an interview with TGC Circle, Rasmussen explains her casting decision, and says that “it was simply instinctive to imagine female company members who would shine as headstrong teenagers, bawdy clowns and brave adventurers. This is OSF’s first all-female Shakespeare, and our casting is a playful parallel to the original all-male casting. But what excites me most about our production is the way this all-female cast is illuminating questions of gender and forgiveness at the heart of this play. It’s like listening to a new band cover an old song – we are simultaneously honoring the lyrics and hearing them in a whole new way.”
