I’m Carmelita Tropicana, a Project Number One artist. Over the past months, I’ve been working on a podcast, That’s Not What Happened, which explores my difficult, often imperfect, process of remembering. The first three episodes of this nine-part series will premiere on Soundcloud on June 8. Click here to listen to our trailer.
On Jun 8 at 7:30 pm, I will be hosting a virtual conversation with fellow immigrant, community activist and arts programmer Solana Chehtman. I’ll be reading and discussing my favorite excerpts from the piece. Don’t miss it.
My work has always drawn on my own lived experiences to engage contemporary social issues. I’m interested in how my own past as an immigrant and political exile fits in the current cultural and socio-political climate.
That’s Not What Happened juxtaposes memories from my childhood, my obsession with food, and the legacies of queer figures like José Esteban Muñoz and José Martí.
The first episodes trace my life in Cuba, with my family, especially Mima, my grandmother, and my father, a Comandante who fought in Fidel Castro’s revolutionary forces.
