Join Soho Rep. for the ultimate open house.

You’re invited to become a creator and collaborator at our home on Walker Street during WRITE WITH US, a festival of free workshops with writers who have recieved productions at Soho Rep. Each playwright will share their unique creative process with you, and beginners are welcome.

Classes are open to 60 participants. All classes last around 3 hours.

Workshops are free and will be open to the public.

Lucas Hnath has written plays about The Clintons, Isaac Newton, and Walt Disney. He will lead a workshop looking at how to write a play about a famous person (and really how to write a play about yourself.)

Gregory S. Moss
Saturday February 6th 2016 at 3pm
Sunday February 7th 2016 at 11am

How to Begin (and Begin Again): One of the primary challenges of starting a new play is allowing yourself to begin from a place of not knowing – a terrifying state to be in, but the frame of mind from which the most interesting and intimate work derives. In this class, we will identify structural elements and procedural choices, allowing writers to observe – and disrupt – their habitual patterns and assumptions. We will explore ways to stay off balance, and tactics for engaging with new work in a manner that compels us to move into unknown structural, thematic and stylistic territory. The class is open to writers at all levels.

By taking a collage approach to creating text about an incident or idea, we will create meaning out of chance and accumulation.

A musical should tell a story on stage with words and music. Beyond those basic requirements, any limitations for what a musical can and cannot be are up for debate. In this workshop we’ll look at the very primal question of how stories are embedded in music and lyrics, and we will start writing a whole truckload of musicals.
