The Public Theater is generously hosting a 2-week Studio workshop of Jackie’s new play which is a co-commission with Berkeley Rep. Many of you will remember Jackie’s stunning piece WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT A PRESENTATION…which we produced in 2012. This new play is inspired by the relationship between care, attention, secrecy, and surveillance.
You’re invited to join us for open rehearsals of this work-in-process on January 27 and February 3 at 3PM at The Public Theater. All tickets are free, but reservations are required and are now available on a first-come-first served basis here.
Next, I’ll be directing the world premiere of SAMARA, a commission by Richard Maxwell, at A.R.T./ New York’s brand new Mezzanine Theater on West 53rd Street. It’s a terrific venue for the show, and perhaps strangely fitting that the play-which is so much about untethering and the journeys we each take to forge home and community-will be our first since the we decided to cease performances at our Walker Street theater in September.
We’re working with a wonderful cast including the musician Steve Earle (who also wrote original compositions for the play), Becca Blackwell, Vinie Burrows, Roy Faudree, Modesto Flako Jimenez, Paul Lazar, and more. Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased here.
For the past three months, our top priority has been to find new locations for the remainder of our work this season. We are deeply grateful for all of the support we’ve received from our peers, colleagues and the wider artistic community during this time-especially Oskar and Maria at The Public and our friends at A.R.T/ New York.
Of course, our space challenges are far from over, but for now, the best way to support Soho Rep. is to come see our plays – and we hope you will.
Happy New Year and see you at the theater(s)!
