Explore a variety of published and unpublished scripts written by Black British Playwrights and produced on British and international stages within the last seventy years, by participating in this fun, informative and interactive 3 hour workshop.
Facilitated by one of the UK’s leading Black Plays Specialist, Simeilia Hodge-Dallaway, this exclusive Soho Rep. interactive workshop will enable participants to learn, engage and perform scenes and monologues from the most ground-breaking plays featured in the Black British Play canon. The Diversity in Plays and Monologues workshop is jam-packed with games, quizzes, lively discussions, video and audio clips and live performances from attendees.
Participants will be encouraged to embrace their individual legacies and recal family traditions and experiences. As a group, we will celebrate the rich and ever-growing legacy of the Black British plays, learn about past and current theatre companies, key political and social events, and the many pioneering Black British artistic leaders who have contributed to creating positive changes for Black/Asian/Minority Ethnic (BAME) practitioners and the arts industry at large.
The workshop will conclude with participants performing a closed sharing of extracts and monologues from the plays explored during the evening.
To entice further research into Black British plays all participants will be introduced to the National Theatre: Black Play Archive and have the chance to purchase The Oberon Book of Monologues for Black Actors: Classical and Contemporary Speeches from Black British Plays at a discounted price.
